Hl. Anatolij wurde in Alexandria geboren. Als Oberchaupt der Orthodoxen Kirche von Konstantinopel bekämpfte er in Ephesus - heute Ruinen bei Selçuk - den Häretiker Nestorius, in Konstantinopel den Häretiker Eutyches. Der Häretiker Dioscurus hat dann seine Ernennung zum Patriarchen befördert und auf Unterstützung gehofft, aber er erhielt in Anatolij einen Gegner, der ihn und seine Anhänger beim Konzil von Chalcedon verdammte. In Todesgefahr heilte Ehrw. Daniel, der Stylite, den Patriarchen. Nach den Überlieferungen starb hl. Anatolij durch die Hand dieser Häretiker im Jahre 458 in Konstantinopel, dem heutigen Istanbul.
