Der junge Römer Bonifatius war nicht Christ, wurde aber von einer reichen Römerin beauftragt, in Tarsus (Kilikien) Reliquien christlicher Märtyrer zu finden und nach Rom zu bringen. Als er dort die Folterungen und Tötungen in der Christenverfolgung unter Kaiser Galerius miterlebte, ließ er sich taufen und bekannte sich zum Christentum, worauf er selbst durch siedendes Pech um 306 sterben musste. Seine Begleiter brachten Bonifatius' Gebeine nach Rom, wo sie an der Via Latina beigesetzt wurden.
