Hl. Alipij (oder auch: Alimpij) gilt als der Begrünter der Ikonenmalerei in der Rus', die er selbst von griechischen Künstlern gelernt hat. Er war unter dem Abt Nikon in das Kiewer Höhlenkloster eingetreten, dort Priestermönch und hatte ab 1083 die dortige Hauptkirche zu Ehren des Entschlafens der Gottesmutter ausgestattet. Viele Ikonen malte er unentgeltlich, wobei mehrere wunderbare Entstehungsgeschichten seiner Werke überliefert werden, die er unter dem Beistand der Engel gefertigt habe. Er starb wohl im Jahre 1114 (jedenfalls nicht später) und wurde in den nahen Höhlen beigesetzt.
