Der Apostel Matthias wurde in Bethlehem, aus dem Stamme Judas geboren. Er erhielt seine Erziehung von dem hl. Symeon dem Gottempfänger. Zuerst wurde er in die Zahl von 70 Apostel gewählt, und nach Christi Himmelfahrt der Zahl der 12 zugezählt, anstatt des Judas Iskaiotos. Er verkündete das Evangelium in Judäa, Äthiopien und Mazedonien. Der Verfolger der Christen zu Jerusalem, der Hohepriester Anna, forderte ihn vor Gericht, indem er Christus und seine Jünger als Verderber der Sitten des Volkes und Verräter des Vaterlandes darstellte. Matthias aber bewies auf Grund der Weissagungen und Vorbilder, dass Christus der verheißene Messias sei. Er wurde wegen Gotteslästerung verurteilt und gesteinigt, und nach dem Tode enthauptet.
