Eusignios war General im römischen Heer, wesentlich beteiligt an Kaiser Konstantins militärischen Erfolgen und ihn unterstützend bei der Etablierung des Christentums als Staatsreligion. Auch im hohen Alter von rund 100 Jahren war Eusignios noch tätig als strategischer Berater der Kaiser von Rom. Unter Kaiser Julian Apostata kam es noch einmal zur Verfolgung der Christen, Eusignios machte aus seinem Christsein aber keinen Hehl und kritisierte den Kaiser zunächst persönlich, dann auch öffentlich. Als er deshalb zum Verhör vor den Kaiser geführt wurde, begann er, die Taten des großen Konstantin zu preisen: er wies darauf hin, wie dieser auf Grund einer Erscheinung zum Glauben an Christus gekommen sei, worauf Eusignios im Alter von 110 Jahren enthauptet wurde.
