Die hl. Agathia (russ. Agafija) war eine wohlhabende, adlige sizilianische Jungfrau von großer Schönheit. Wegen kaiserlichen Erlass zur Christenverfolgung wurde sie verhaftet. Der Statthalter Quintianus veranlasste Verhöre, Folter und Qualen: Mit den Händen an einen Balken gehängt, wurden Agathia die Brüste mit einer Zange zerrissen, mit einer Fackel gebrannt und schließlich abgeschnitten. In der Nacht erschien ihr dann der hl. Apostel Petrus im Kerker und heilte sie. Tags darauf legte man sie auf spitze Scherben und glühende Kohlen, bis ein Erdbeben die Stadt erschütterte, worauf das Volk Quintianus bedrohte, bis der von der hl. Agatha abließ und sie ins Gefängnis warf, wo sie starb.
