Heilige Anna und Joachim waren nach Kirchlicher Überlieferung die Eltern der Gottesmutter Maria und somit die Großeltern von Jesus Christus. Ihre Lebensgeschichte ist dem alttestamentlichen Vorbild von Hanna und ihrem Sohn Samuel (1. Samuel 1-2) nachgezeichnet: erst nach zwanzigjähriger kinderloser Ehe gebar Anna die Maria. Anna und Joachim wurden schon in frühchristlicher Zeit dargestellt, seit dem 6. Jahrhundert wird Anna als Marias Mutter verehrt.
