Ezechiel stammte aus priesterlichen Geschlecht (Ezechiel 1, 1 - 3). Er wurde 597 v. Chr. mit etwa zehntausend Juden aus der Oberschicht in die Gefangenschaft nach Babylon - dem heutigen Han-al-Mahawil im Irak - verschleppt (2. Könige 24, 14) und lebte mit anderen Verbannten in Thel-Abib (Ezechiel 3, 15) am Fluss Chebar (Ezechiel 1, 1) - wohl dem heutigen Schatt en-Nil bei Babylon, wo er 593 zum Propheten berufen wurde. 22 Jahre lang wirkte er unter den Exilierten, stärkte ihren Glauben auch in der Fremde und ließ sie das Exil als Buße für die Verfehlungen der Väter verstehen.
