Der hl. Martin wurde um 600 in Toskana geboren, in seiner Jugend ging er zum Studium nach Rom und schloss sich der Geistlichkeit an. Im Jahre 649 wurde er zum Papst gewählt. Er bekämpfte die Irrlehre des Monotheletismus. Da der hl. Martin die Häresie mehrfach verurteilt hatte, erlitt er ein einjähriges Exil auf den Kykladischen Inseln. Im Jahre 654 nach Konstantinopel gebracht, wurde er hier verurteilt und ins Gefängnis gesperrt. Danach wurde der Heilige in die Verbannung nach Chersones, auf der Krim (heut. Ukraine) geschickt, wo er auch starb, im Jahre 665.
