Hl. Anastasius wurde 559 Patriarch von Antiochia, dem heutigen Antakya. In der damaligen Kirchenhierarchie war das nach dem Papst in Rom und den Patriarchen von Konstantinopel und Alexandria das vierthöchste Amt. Anastasius erregte den Widerwillen von Kaiser Justinian, weil er einige seiner - einer radikalen Spielart des Monophysitismus entsprechenden - Auffassungen über die Natur Christi bekämpfte. Anastasius verlor 570 sein Bistum, wurde verbannt und erst 593 auf Fürsprache von hl. Gregor, dem Großen, wieder in sein Amt eingesetzt.
