Theodor lebte schon in seiner Jugend als Asket. In seiner Heimat trat er ins Kloster ein, wurde Abt, wallfahrtete drei Mal nach Jerusalem und besuchte mehrere Klöster in Palästina. Widerwillig stellte er sich der Verantwortung, 589 das Amt des Bischofs von Anastasiupolis zu übernehmen. Zeitlebens war ihm die Verbreitung der Verehrung von Georg ein wichtiges Anliegen. Wegen der vielfältigen Wunder, die er vollbrachte, erhielt er den Beinamen "Thaumaturgos", "Wundertäter".
