Die heiligen Märtyrerinnen, Jungfrauen Agape, Irina und Chionia waren leibliche Schwestern. Sie führten ein frommes Leben in Aquilea (in Ilyrien, heut. Italien). Während der Christenverfolgung unter Kaiser Dioklitian (284-305) wurden die Jungfrauen Agape und Chionia als Christinnen verurteilt, mehreren Quallen unterworfen und schließlich auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbannt. Die hl. Märtyrerin Irina wurde durch Pfeile tödlich verletzt. Sie starb am Vorabend der Christi Auferstehung – des Osterfestes. Ihr Leichnam dann von der hl. Anastasya (Gedächtnis: 4. Januar (22. Dezember)) bestattet. Das geschah im Jahre 304.
