Der hl. Coelestin wurde in der Campania (Italien) geboren; 422 bis 432 war er Bischof von Rom. Vor seiner Wahl zum Bischof von Rom war er Erzdiakon der römischen Kirche. In Berichten über seine Amtszeit wird hauptsächlich auf die christologischen Kontroversen über den Nestorianismus eingegangen. Nachdem das Konzil von Ephesus 431 festgelegt hatte, dass Christus eine Person sei, in der sich zwei Naturen, die göttliche und die menschliche, vereinen, ließ der hl. Coelestin den Patriarchen von Konstantinopel, Nestorius, exkommunizieren. Der hl. Coelestin entsandte Germanus von Auxerre nach Britannien, um die Anhänger des Pelagianismus zu bekehren. Er starb am 26. Juli 432 in Rom.
