Der Ehrw. Georgios war noch sehr jung, als er schon Mönch werden wollte. Er wurde dann Erzbischof der Hauptstadt Mytilene auf Lesbos. In den seit 726 anhaltenden Streitigkeiten um die Verehrung der Ikonen setzte er sich für die Erhaltung der Bilderverehrung ein und machte die Insel zum Zufluchtsort der verfolgten Kämpfer der Orthodoxie, darunter war die Kaiserin von Byzanz, Irina, die im Exil in Mytilene starb. Gerühmt wurde auch seine Mildtätigkeit, er soll Verzückungen erlebt haben, in denen er "engelhaften Geist" empfing. Er starb im Jahre 820 in Chersones (heut. Ukraine).
