Der Ehrw. Josef wurde auf Sizilien geboren. In seiner Jugend, als er 15 Jahre alt war, wurde er Mönch im Kloster in Thessaloniki (Griechenland). Nach einigen Jahren ist er nach Konstantinopel umgezogen. Hier, bei der Verfolgung auf die hl. Ikonen (Ikonoklasmus), wurde er zu einem der eifrigsten Verteidiger der hl. Ikonen. Seine Mitstreiter waren der ehrw. Grigorij Dekapolit und viele andere. Mehrmals wurde der hl. Josef deswegen ins Gefängnis geworfen. Letztlich konnte er aus dem Exil nach Konstantinopel zurückkehren. Unter Kaiser Wassilios den Mazedonier, wurde er vom Patriarchen mit den Ehrentitel "Skenophylax (Satzmeister) der Größen Kirche" beschmückt. Der Patriarch Photios von Konstantinopel ernannte ihm zum Beichtvater der Geistlichkeit der Hauptstadt, weswegen er "Vater der Väter" genannt wurde. Vom Gottes Gnade begabt, dichtete er ca. 300 Kanones (langes Loblied dem Herrn, oder einem Heiligen, bzw. einem Kirchenfest). Deshalb wird er "der Liederdichter" genannt. Der hl. Josef starb im Jahre 883.
