Der hl. Irenaeus, Bischof von Sirmium (heut. Ungarn) diente seiner Kirche unter den Kaisern Diokletian und Maximian (285-305) in Pannonien als Priester, hatte eine Familie und führte ein frommes Leben. Er wurde Bischof in der Zeit der Christenverfolgung. So erlitt er selbst die Verfolgung und das Martyrium unter Präfekt Probos. Nach den verhängten Qualen wurde er enthauptet, und sein Leib in den Fluss Sawa geworfen.
