Das Fest ist gewidmet der Begebenheit, welche beschrieben ist im Evangelium Luk 1, 26-38. Die Einsetzung dieses Festes reicht in das hohe Altertum zurück, sodass bereits der hl. Athanasios (IV. Jahrh.) desselben erwähnt, indem er es nennt das erste in der Reihe der Feste und besonders verehrungswürdig, weil es ist der Anfang des Heilsplanes unserer Erlösung. Im 8. Jahrh. verfassten der hl. Johannes von Damaskus und Theophanes, Bischof von Nikäa auf dieses Fest einen Kanon, welcher bis jetzt gesungen wird.
