Der hl. Wassilios war Priester in Ankyra, in Galatien, zur Zeit des Kaisers Julianos den Abtrünnigen (361-363), der das Christentum wieder verfolgte. Der Priester wurde deshalb gefangen genommen und schweren Quallen unterworfen, indem aus seiner Haut täglich sieben Riemen geschnitten wurden. Schließlich wurde er von zwei glühenden Hörnern durchbohrt, wodurch er auch starb, im Jahre 363.
