Der hl. Paul wurde in Tesaloniki geboren, und war Nachfolger des hl. Alexander, Patriarchen von Konstantinopel. Wegen Widerlegung der Irrlehre des Arianismus wurde er viermal vom Patriarchenamt verbannt, vom Kaiser Konstantin, selbst ein Arianer. Zuletzt wurde er in das Exil nach Armenien geschickt, wo die Arianer ihn beim Gottesdienst erdrosselten (350).
