Der ehrwürdige Ioannikij wurde am Ende des 7. Jahrhundert im Dorf Marikati (in Bytinien) geboren. In seiner Jugend diente er als Soldat seinem Vaterland. Danach entfernte er sich auf dem Berg Olympus, und lebte dort mehrere Jahre als Einsiedler, an einsamen und wilden Orten. Gott schenkte ihm die Gabe der Weissagung und der Wunder. Er starb friedlich im Jahre 846.
