Zosimus lebte als Einsiedeler in der Wüste bei wilden Tieren. Vom Präfekten Dometianus gefangen genommen, bekannte er sich zum Christentum, wurde mit glühenden Eisen in den Ohren gebrannt, in kochendes Wasser geworfen und kopfüber aufgehängt, aber er blieb unverletzt. Stattdessen erschien ein Löwe im Theater und verkündete mit menschlicher Stimme den Glauben an Christus. Dadurch wurde Athanasios zum Glauben bekehrt.
