Die Kaiserin Theodora war Gemahlin des Kaisers Theophil († 842). Sie betete heimlich zu Heiligenbildern (Ikonen) und hielt ihren Gatten vor der Verfolgung von Ikonenverehrern zurück. 842 verwitwet, wurde sie die Regentin ihres minderjährigen Sohnes. In ihrem ersten Regierungserlass verfügte sie die Einstellung der Verfolgungen wegen Ikonenanbetung. Während ihrer Regentschaft wurde der Feiertag des "Triumphes des orthodoxen Glaubens" eingeführt. Ihr Leben beschloss sie 867 in einem Kloster, acht Jahre zuvor hatte sie die Nonnenweihe empfangen.
