Atanasij war Mönch und ab 1640 Abt des Klosters St. Simeon in Brest / (Bjeraszje). Nach dem Inkrafttreten der verordneten Kirchenunion verteidigte er die orthodoxen Gläubigen gegenüber den dem Katholizismus zugeneigten polnischen Behörden - Weißrussland war damals polnisch. Seine Rede im polnischen Parlament 1643 machte ihn weithin bekannt; sie war wohl auch der Anlass, ihn ein Jahr später zu verhaften. Nach seiner Freilassung 1645 konnte er drei Jahre in Freiheit wirken, bis ihn die Polen 1648 bezichtigten, ein Sympathisant des rebellischen Kosakenführers Bohdan Xmelnyc'kyj zu sein. Atanasij wurde gefoltert und hingerichtet.
