Der hl. Apostel Titus stammte aus Kandia, (heut. Insel Kreta). Nach seiner Bekehrung zum Christentum durch den hl. Apostel Paulus, schloss er sich der Schar der 70 Apostel Christi an. Der hl. Apostel Paulus erwähnt seinen Schüler, den hl. Apostel Titus in seinem Brief an die Galater (Kap. 3,20) und in seinem 2. Brief an die Korinther (Kap. 7,6-7 und Kap. 8,6-23). Der Kirchenhistoriker, der hl. Eusebios von Caesarea zufolge, war er der erste Bischof von Gortyna auf Kreta. Nach der Überlieferung brachte er durch sein Wort einen heidnischen Tempel zum Einsturz – an dieser Stelle wurde dann eine christliche Kirche errichtet. Himmlischer Glanz erleuchtete sein Antlitz, als er mit 94 Jahren starb, im I. Jahrhundert.
