Hadrianus (lateinischer Name) musste nach der Legende als Hauptmann der römischen Armee unter Kaiser Galerius und dessen Mitregenten Maximian 23 Christen verfolgen. Deren Standhaftigkeit bekehrte ihn und führte zum eigenen Martyrium: Auf einem Amboss wurden ihm mit einer Eisenstange die Beine zerschmettert und mit einem Beil die Hand abgehauen. Seine Frau Natalia stand ihm, Mut zusprechend, bei; ihr erschien er nach seinem Tod, beschützte ihr Schiff im Sturm und verkündete auch ihr den Martertod. Sie brachte seine Gebeine nach Byzanz - das heutige Ístanbul -, wo sie beigesetzt wurden.
