Johannes war Handwerker in einem Feinmetallbetrieb, vielleicht in der Münzanstalt, bevor er Leiter der Finanzverwaltung der Hagia Sophia in Konstantinopel - dem heutigen Ístanbul - und damit einer der wichtigsten Diakone der Hauptkirche des Patriarchats wurde. 582 wurde er auf den Sitz des Patriarchen erhoben. Zeitgenossen rühmten seinen streng asketischen Lebenswandel und seine caritativen Leistungen für die Armen der Stadt.
