Der hl. Theofan wurde in Janina geboren, als Erwachsener wurde er im Dochiar – Kloster, auf dem Berge Athos aufgenommen, wo er später Hegumen (Klostervorsteher) wurde. Später begab er sich nach Nausa (in Makedonien). Dort stiftete er ein Kloster zu Ehren der Erzengel. Hier wirkte er bis zu seinem Tode, der im hohen Alter erfolgte, im 15. Jahrhundert.
