Der hl. Jakob war ein Bruder des hl. Johannes des Theologen, der mit ihm zusammen zum Apostolat berufen wurde beim Fischfange auf dem galiläischen See. Nach der Himmelfahrt Christi verkündete er das Evangelium in Spanien und den angrenzenden Ländern. Er wurde von Herodes Agrippa zum Tode verurteilt (Apostelgesch. 12, 1-2) und mit dem Schwert enthauptet um das Jahr 49. Seine Reliquien befinden sich in der Stadt Compostella in Spanien.
