Das zweite ökumenische Konzil im Jahr 381 wurde in Konstantinopel - dem heutigen Istanbul - von Theodosius I. einberufen, dem Kaiser des Oströmischen Reiches. Die 150 heiligen Väter, die bei diesem Konzil zusammenkamen, bestätigten die Resolutionen des I. ökumenischen Konzils von Nicäa (325) und definierten den Heiligen Geist, zusammen mit Vater und Sohn, als substantiellen Bestandteil der göttlichen Dreieinigkeit. Das Konzil erkannte dem Bischof von Konstantinopel den höchsten Rang, nach dem Bischof von Rom, zu.
