Der hl. Nikolaos war Patriarch von Konstantinopel, seit 895. Er wurde "Mystikos" genannt, weil er das älteste Mitglied des Geheimrates beim oströmischen Kaiser war. Nach zehnjähriger Leitung der Kirche des Amtes beraubt, wurde er vom Kaiser Leo I. verbannt. Die Verbannung geschah, nachdem der Patriarch die vierte Eheschließung des Kaisers, auch den kirchlichen Satzungen zuwider, als rechtgemäß anzunehmen. Erst im Jahre 911, nach dem Tode des Kaisers Leo I., konnte der Patriarch Nikolaos zu seinem Amt zurückkehren, welches er bis seinem Tode (im Jahre 925) behielt.
