Der Ehrw. Pachomios, Sohn eines heidnischen Vaters, musste 314 gegen seinen Willen Soldat werden, wurde aber bald wieder entlassen und ließ sich taufen. In Tabenísi am rechten Nilufer gründete er 320 ein Kloster und wurde dessen erster Abt. Die Legende berichtet: ein Engel habe ihm beim Holzsammeln befohlen, an dieser Stelle das Kloster zu gründen. Der Ruf der Mönchsgemeinschaft verbreitete sich rasch, das Kloster wuchs. Das strenge Klosterleben in dem ummauerten Areal mit der gemeinschaftlichen Nutzung aller Dinge war neu, bislang lebten Mönche in Einsiedeleien. Auch die Ordensregeln seien Pachomius von einem Engel überbracht worden.
