Die heiligen Märtyrer lebten zur Zeit des Kaisers Adrian (117-138), und waren Sklaven eines reichen Mannes Katullos, aus Attalien. Als bei Katullos ein Sohn geboren war, wünschte er, als Heide, dass alle seine Sklaven an dem Opfer der Göttin Fortuna teilnehmen. Ein solches Opfer haben die hl. Märtyrer Esper und Zoi, als Christen, abgelehnt. Dafür wurden ihre Söhne, Kyriakos und Theodulos, und sie selbst bestraft: sie wurden in einem brennenden Offen geworfen. Das geschah unter dem römischen Kaiser Hadrian, im 2. Jahrhundert.
