Xenophon war ein sehr wohlhabender Mann und Senator in Konstantinopel - dem heutigen Ístanbul -. Er sandte seine beiden Söhne Arkadios und Johannes zum Jura-Studium nach Beirut, aber sie erlitten Schiffbruch. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Maria machte sich Xenophon auf die Suche nach den beiden und fand sie in Jerusalem, wo sie Mönche geworden waren und wundersame Taten wirkten.
