Der ehrwürdige Johannes wurde im Jahre 778 in Irinopolis geboren. Er wurde Mönch und später Hegumenos (Vorsteher) im Dalmatien–Kloster zu Konstantinopel. Unter Kaiser Nikephoros I. (802-811) ist er ins Kloster "Kathara" ebenfalls bei Konstantinopel, umgezogen. Dieses Kloster "Kathara" („Kloster der Reinen“), wurde unter dem oströmischen Kaiser Justinos (518-527) bei der Stadt Nikea gestiftet. Wegen der Verehrung der hl. Ikonen wurde der Heilige verfolgt, unter den Kaisern Leo und Theophilos. Er starb im Exil um 832-839, auf der Insel Afusia.
