Simon war ebenso wie Jakobus ein Bruder von Jesus. In der katholischen und orthodoxen Überlieferung wird er als Bruder von Judas Thaddäus betrachtet; beide gelten als Söhne von Kleopas, den die Überlieferung als Bruder von Joseph, dem (Zieh-)Vater Jesu, bezeichnet; demnach wäre Simon also Jesu Vetter (► Heilige Sippe). Mit dieser Überlieferung werden die Bibelstellen Markusevangelium 6, 3 und Matthäusevangelium 13, 55, wonach Simon und Judas Jesu Brüder waren, erklärt, weil es Brüder Jesu im eigentlichen Sinne nicht geben könne, sonst wäre die Jungfräulichkeit Marias befleckt.
