Der ehrwürdige Sampson war ein reicher und vornehmer Römer, welcher als Arzt den Kranken und Armen uneigennützig half. Danach verteilte er sein Vermögen unter den Armen und gab seine Sklaven frei. Auf seine Kosten baute er in Konstantinopel ein Haus zur Aufnahme von Pilgern, Armen und Kranken, welchen er auch selbst liebevoll diente. Der Patriarch von Konstantinopel weihte ihn zum Priester, und der oströmische Kaiser Justinianus, der von dem Heiligen geheilt wurde, setzte den hl. Sampson zum Verwalter der kaiserlichen Fremdenherberge ein. Der Heilige starb um 530.
