Nach dem Sieg des Großfürsten Vladimir über die litauischen Stamme im Jahre 983 (nach anderen 978) sollte den heidnischen Göttern ein Dankopfer gebracht werden, wobei das Los auf Ioann, den Sohn des Waragers Feodor fiel, der lange Zeit im Kriegsdienst in Konstantinopel gestanden und dort auch - ebenso wie sein Sohn - die Taufe empfangen hatte. Sein früherer heidnischer Name war Thur (oder: Thor). Da der Vater sich weigerte, seinen Sohn hinschlachten zu lassen und den christlichen Glauben bekannte, wurden beide getötet.
