Die hl. Martyrerin Perpetua stammte aus einem vornehmen Haus. Sie und ihre Sklavin Felicitas wurden verhaftet, weil sie sich als Katechumene auf die Taufe vorbereiteten. Die hl. Perpetua ging der Überlieferung nach mit ihrem kleinen Sohn ins Gefängnis und empfing dort die Taufe. Ihr Vater versuchte erst mit Gewalt, dann mit Bitten und Flehen und unter Tränen, sie vom Christentum abzubringen. Aber die hl. Perpetua blieb standhaft und wurde mit der hl. Felicitas und weiteren Christen bei einer Vorführung, die Kaiser Septimus Severus zum Geburtstag seines Sohnes abhalten ließ, im Zirkus den wilden Tieren vorgeworfen und dabei schwer verletzt. Mit der Hilfe Gottes, von den Tieren verschont, starben sie durch Enthauptung (um das Jahr 203).
