Hl. Andreas von Kreta wurde um 650 in Damaskus geboren. Im Alter von 15 Jahren trat Andreas in Jerusalem ins Kloster ein. Bischof Theodor von Jerusalem beauftragte ihn im Jahre 685 den Kaiser Konstantinus Pogonatus zur Abhaltung des 4. Konzils von Konstantinopel zu bewegen. Andreas wurde nach erfolgreicher Mission zum Metropoliten von Gortyna in Kreta ernannt. Seine Haltung zum Monotheletismus war wankelmütig, berühmt wurde er aber wegen seiner Predigten und Schriften und vor allem als Hymnologe. Sein "Griechischer Kanon" mit 250 Strophen wird in der griechischen Kirche bis heute in der Fastenzeit gebetet, andere Hymnen und seine Regeln der Hymnologie sind bis heute von Bedeutung. Er starb am 17. Juli 712.
