Alexander studierte in Konstantinopel - dem heutigen Ístanbul - und bekehrte sich als Erwachsener zum Christentum. Elf Jahre lang lebte er als Einsiedler in Syrien, dort bekehrte er 30 Räuber, um dann mit ihnen ein Kloster zu gründen. Er gründete Klöster am Euphrat, in Konstantinopel - dem heutigen Ístanbul - sowie am östlichen Ufer des Bosporus in Gomon in Bithynien - dem heutigen Anadolufeneri - und führte dort ein, dass die Mönche das Gotteslob rund um die Uhr sangen - deshalb wurden sie "Akoimetoi", "Schlaflose" genannt. Durch ein Wunder bekehrte er Rabulas, den Herrscher von Edessa - dem heutigen Sanlıurfa.
