Der hl. Methodios, Patriarch von Konstantinopel wurde um das Jahr 790 in Syracus, auf Sizilien, in einer reichen Familie geboren. Doch als junger Mensch, trat er ins Kloster auf der Insel Chios ein. Sein Vermögen spendierte er für den Aufbau des Klosters. Später wurde er Sekretär des hl. Nikephoros, Patriarchen von Konstantinopel (Gedächtnis: 23. (10.) Juni). Mit ihm, und auch nach seinem Tod, widmete sich der hl. Methodios der Verteidigung der heiligen Ikonen, insbesondere als er zum Patriarchen erwählt wurde. Mehrfach wurde er für die Verteidigung der Ikonenverehrung bestraft, verfolgt und ins Gefängnis geworfen. Erst am Ende seines Lebens, unter der seligen Kaiserin Theophania, wurde der Heilige befreit. Der hl. Methodios starb friedlich am 14. Juni 847 in Konstantinopel.
