Der hl. Marcellinus lebte in der Zeit heftiger Kämpfe des römischen Kaisers Dioklitian (284-305) gegen die Kirche. Er selbst wurde angesichts der Verfolgung schwach. Später hat er dies aber bereut und ist zu Christus zurückgekehrt. Dem Kaiser hatte er dessen teueren Geschenke zurück gebracht, und bekannte sich wieder zum Christus. Dafür wurden der Heilige und seine Begleiter von Kaiser zum Tode durch Enthauptung verurteilt. Das geschah im Jahre 304 in Rom.
