Der hl. Caesarius wurde in Arianz bei Nazianz, dem heutigen Nenisi in der Türkei, als Sohn von hl. Gregor von Nazianz, dem Älteren geboren. Er war auch Bruder von hl. Gregor von Nazianz, dem Jüngeren. Er wirkte als Arzt in Konstantinopel am Hof der Kaiser Konstantin (337 - 361) und Julian. Caesarius wurde 364 Statthalter von Bithynien. Nachdem er aus einem großen Erdbeben errettet worden war, widmete er sich auf das Anraten seines Bruders und dessen Freund, hl. Basilius, des Großen, dem geistigen Leben. Sein Bruder hielt ihm die uns überlieferte Totenrede, im Jahre 368 in Bithynien (in Kleinasien).
