Theodoret war Priester. Auch in den Verfolgungen unter Kaiser Julianus Apostata blieb er an seinem Platz in der Stadt Antiochia - dem heutigen Antakya in der Türkei. Weil er sich weigerte, die heiligen Gefäße an die Soldaten auszuliefern, wurde er gefoltert, schließlich enthauptet.
