Er regierte 379-395, und wurde bekannt durch seine Hingebung an die christliche Religion. Bei seiner Thronbesteigung erließ er ein Verbot der Götzenopfer und aller Arten von Zauberei, was bei der Tilgung der heidnischen Irrtümer und zur Verbreitung des Christentums mitwirkte; der Tempel des Serapis zu Alexandria wurde zerstört. Unter Theodosios wurde das II. ökumenische Konzil berufen. Er starb friedlich im Jahre 395.
