Die Kettenfeier bezieht sich auf die in der Apostelgeschichte (Kap. 12) berichtete Befreiung des hl. Apostel Petrus aus dem Kerker in Jerusalem, im Jahre 42. Die zurückgelassenen Ketten wurden nach der Überlieferung von der seligen Eudokia, der Frau des Kaisers Theodosius Jüngeren, als Reliquien einer Jerusalem-Wallfahrt nach Konstantinopel mitgebracht (437-439). Ein Teil der Reliquie wurde nach Rom, zu ihrer Tochter Eudoxia, gebracht. Sie wurde zusammengefügt mit denen, die der hl. Apostel Petrus als Gefangener Neros in Rom getragen hatte und die von Balbina gefunden worden waren. Ebenso wurde der Festtag von Eudoxia veranlasst.
