Legenden - mit oft antjüdischem Einschlag - erzählen, Judas sei Jude gewesen und wegen seines Übertritts zum Christentum ermordet worden; demnach war er es, der Kaiserin Helena 326 den Ort zeigte, an dem das Kreuz Christi vergraben war. Aufgrund der Zeichen, die durch das Kreuz geschahen, habe er sich bekehrt und bei der Taufe den Namen Cyriacus erhalten. Als Nachfolger Makarios I. soll er Bischof von Jerusalem geworden sein und unter Kaiser Julian Apostata das Martyrium erlitten haben.
