Der hl. Tarasij übernahm ein hohes Staatsamt und war einer der vertrautesten Ratgeber des oströmischen Kaisers. In einer schwierigen Zeit des kirchlichen Lebens wurde er einstimmig (im Jahre 784) zum Patriarchen von Konstantinopel erwählt. Auf seine Vorstellung hin wurde durch Kaiserin Irene im Jahre 787 das 7. Ökumenische Konzil von Nikea berufen, welche die Irrlehre der Ikonoklasten verurteilte. Der Heilige starb in hohem Alter im Jahre 806 und ist bestattet am Bosporus, in dem von ihm gegründeten Kloster.
