Johannes trat um 435 - noch als Schüler - ins Kloster Irenaion in Konstantinopel - dem heutigen Ístanbul - ein, das später "Akoimetenkloster" genannt wurde und am östlichen Ufer des Bosporus in Gomon in Bithynien - dem heutigen Anadolufeneri - lag oder von ihm dorthin verlegt wurde. Nach sechs Jahren strenger Askese kam er als Armer verkleidet wieder zu seinem reichen Elternhaus zurück, ohne sich zu erkennen zu geben und wohnte dort unerkannt als verwahrloster Bettler vor dem Haus. Nach einiger Zeit errichtete man für ihn eine einfache Hütte - griechisch "καλύβη", daher der Name Kalybit. Dort kümmerte er sich mit den ihm zugedachten Gaben um Arme. Kurz vor seinem Tode soll er sich zu erkennen gegeben haben durch die Rückgabe eines kostbaren Evangeliars, das er einst von seinen Eltern erhalten hatte.
