Der hl. Jakob war der Sohn eines Fürsten. Nach seinem Studium, und noch ein junger Mensch, entfernte er sich in die kurdischen Berge, in der Nähe von Nisibis, um dort ein höchst asketisches Leben zu führen. Wohl ob dieser Haltung wurde er 314 zum Bischof von Nisibis gewählt, wo er die große Kirche bauen ließ, die seinen Namen trug, und die in ihren Ruinen noch heute sein Grab enthält. Er war unter den hll. Vätern des 1. Ökumenischen Konzils zu Nicäa (325) und wandte sich gegen die Irrlehre des Arianismus. Durch seine Gebete wurde seine Stadt Nisibis, von der Belagerung durch den persischen Scharr Schapor II., wundersam gerettet. Der hl. Jakob starb friedlich um 350.
